How Often Should You Update Your Website?
Very often I see websites that have not been updated in years. Lack of current blog posts, resumes and bios with only older information, old copyright dates, and no recent information make it very easy for the viewer to assume that you are no longer in business, not creating anything new, or that you're not really serious.
How often to update? Whenever the information and images on your website become dated, and when you have new info to add. When you have finished, photographed new work. When you have new products and services. No less than four times per year, in my opinion. Then viewers, and search engines, can see that you are active and productive.
If you have a portfolio, this means you'll want to keep it updated as well. Your website is a mirror of your hard copy portfolio. Yes, you still need a hard copy portfolio, and a digital portfolio. Your website does not replace them. You also need a website dedicated to you alone. Facebook, online galleries and business websites do not replace your own website.
Also, make sure the design and navigation of your website are up-to-date and looking fresh. If you haven't had a major re-do or facelift in a couple of years, it's time.
If you're good at quickly updating it yourself, great! Mark your calendar so you don't forget. Get some help if you need it. It's not a good use of your time to spend hours struggling with it and your results may look less than professional.
